Humana’s CenterWell is set to open 23 clinics at Walmart locations across four states by mid-2025, according to the announcement on Wednesday. These clinics, previously Walmart’s, will be in Florida, Georgia, Missouri, and Texas. CenterWell, the fastest-growing senior-focused primary care provider, will operate these clinics under both the CenterWell and Conviva brands.

“We are excited by the unique opportunity to lease space from a world-class community partner such as Walmart and offer seniors in these four states greater access to our integrated approach to care,” said Sanjay Shetty, M.D., president of CenterWell, in the release. “These nearly two dozen primary care centers are specifically designed for seniors, and each location’s design, including dedicated entrances and easy parking, offers patients the access that they have come to expect at our clinics across the nation.”

Humana has a huge presence in Medicare Advantage, where it aims to drive profits and provide primary care options to its members amidst rising regulatory and medical cost pressures. The clinics will be in major metropolitan areas such as Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville, Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Kansas City.

Earlier this year, Humana expanded into North Carolina and Louisiana, adding new clinics in existing markets and acquiring locations in Texas and Nevada from Cano Health. Despite financial pressures, Humana exceeded Wall Street expectations in the first quarter with $29.6 billion in revenue and a net income of $741 million. Humana will report second-quarter financial results next week.

Walmart, which launched its health clinics in 2019, had established 51 locations across five states but ended the initiative in April, citing sustainability issues.

“We are looking forward to welcoming CenterWell into these purpose-built healthcare spaces to offer quality care to communities in four states,” said Brian Setzer, executive vice president of Walmart Health & Wellness, in the press release. “Leasing these spaces to a well-known and successful healthcare delivery organization is a win for customers and patients, as we continue to focus on our core health and wellness business of pharmacy and optical.”

As of March 31, CenterWell served approximately 318,000 seniors across 15 states in 300 care centers, up from 200 centers in nine states at the beginning of 2022.
