Owlet, a company known for its infant vitals monitoring products, has announced a new partnership with Wheel, a popular telehealth platform. This collaboration aims to simplify access to Owlet’s FDA-cleared pulse oximeter, BabySat, for caregivers through rapid telehealth prescriptions.
Previously requiring a separate doctor’s visit, BabySat can now be prescribed within as little as four hours through Wheel’s online portal and network of physicians. This streamlined process allows caregivers to monitor their child’s vitals conveniently at home, promoting early detection of potential health concerns.
Owlet emphasizes the importance of home monitoring, particularly for at-risk infants who may have had prior complications and require ongoing monitoring. Telehealth consultations enable regular assessments, potentially reducing the need for frequent in-person visits.
The partnership also addresses concerns about access to healthcare, especially for underserved and minority communities facing nationwide provider shortages. “Home monitoring plays a pivotal role in safeguarding at-risk infants by improving access to health services,” said Jim Fidacaro, Owlet’s Senior Vice President and General Manager of Healthcare, in a press release. “Owlet, in partnership with Wheel, can now enable parents to obtain prescriptions for BabySat directly via Wheel’s online portal and network of physicians.”
Owlet’s press release highlights the potential for “little to no cost” with insurance reimbursement for BabySat prescriptions. While Medicaid coverage isn’t currently available, the company prioritizes expanding accessibility through this program.
However, online prescribing of medical devices raises concerns among regulators. In December 2023, the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Inspector General released a report exposing fraudulent remote monitoring schemes involving durable medical equipment and expensive lab tests billed to Medicare. Owlet and Wheel will need to navigate these concerns by ensuring proper oversight and transparency within their telehealth platform.
This collaboration between Owlet and Wheel offers a promising solution for simplifying access to infant monitoring devices, potentially improving early detection of health issues and promoting better outcomes for newborns. However, addressing potential regulatory hurdles related to online medical device prescriptions remains crucial for long-term success.
